Our Symbol is Death”

Gospel Of Grief cover

I think anyone who reads my reviews can tell I love black metal. To me, there is no better form of metal. Since it’s creation by Venom in 1982, black metal has gone though several changes. Black metal spread across Europe In the 80’s. Bands like Bathory and Hell Hammer laid the groundwork for what was to come. In the early 90’s Norway took over and some ferocious bands starting forming. Bands like Darkthrone, Immortal, Mayhem, and Emperor perfected the black metal sound. Black metal is fast, dark and atmospheric. Some would say it is more about spreading the word of Satan, than the music. Most of these bands have a real “us against the world” attitude, but it is this feeling the music creates that’s the most important part. Without that, this music has nothing. Gospel of Grief is a black metal band from Greece. Their 2010 full-length album called Our Symbol Is Death is, and I am just going to say it, one of the best black metal albums I have ever heard. I am in awe of this album. This band has crafted a near flawless collection of high quality songs. Each song is heavy on feeling and the guitar riffs each have their own passion. There are no wasted moments anywhere on this record. Each song has demanding strength. You can truly feel anger and despair. This is a masterwork that belongs with the giants of the genre. If you are into black metal, get your hands on it any way you can. Gospel of Grief has made something special here. I have not heard bands like Gorgoroth or 1349 put out albums this good. I love it. To me, this is as close to perfect as black metal can get.
